Mawson was established in It is the longest continuously operated station in Antarctica. Mawson is a particularly favourable location for a station. It has excellent access to the hinterland and surrounding coastal waters. The harbour is sheltered from ocean swells and has a depth reaching 90 m. During the ice-free period usually experienced in February, a ship may anchor within m of the station. Barges carrying cargo take only a few minutes to travel from the ship to shore.
Living at Mawson is very comfortable. Macquarie Island station is in the sub-Antarctic. Scientists and support staff occupy all 4 stations year-round. McMurdo is built on the bare volcanic rock of Hut Point Peninsula on Ross Island, the solid ground farthest south that is accessible by ship. The station was established in December The year-old Mawson left with two younger companions — Xavier Mertz, a Swiss mountaineer and ski champion, and Lieutenant Belgrave Ninnis, a year-old British army officer.
With 12 dogs and two sledges, the party headed to the far east of Cape Denison. Established in , Mawson is Australia's oldest Antarctic station and the oldest continuously inhabited Antarctic station south of the Antarctic Circle.
Mawson was listed on the Register of the National Estate in and listed on the Commonwealth Heritage List on 22 June , reflecting the post-World War Two revival of Australia's scientific research and territorial interests in Antarctica. Mawson Station houses approximately 20 personnel over winter and up to 60 in summer.
It is accessible by sea for only a short period each austral summer, between February and March. In , the Minister for External Affairs , H. Evatt indicated his support for a proposal by Douglas Mawson for the establishment of a permanent Australian base in Antarctica.
It was another seven years before a suitable ship, the Kista Dan could be chartered to set up facilities on the southern continent. The station site was chosen in by Dr. Operation Highjump OpHjp of to select the site for its large natural harbour Horseshoe Harbour and permanently exposed rock for building.
